Understanding Anxiety & Panic Attacks

Eureka Centre’s experienced clinical hypnotherapist, Jeanette Dreyer answers your questions about Anxiety.

A generalised anxiety disorder is marked by the following symptoms:

  • Excessive worrying
  • Restlessness
  • Feeling on edge
  • Being easily fatigued
  • Difficulty in concentrating
  • Cold and clammy hands
  • Shortness of breath
  • Irritability
  • Jumpiness
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Muscle tension
  • Inability to switch off
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Attention deficit disorder (ADHD)

Prescription medications are not a cure for anxiety. They may provide temporary relief, while they suppress or dull the symptoms, but over the long term some have nasty side effects, and others may become addictive. Doctors and psychologists agree that while prescription medications may be useful in the short term, anxiety should not be treated with medication alone.

Eureka Centre offers effective treatment for anxiety through Hypnotherapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Treatment), BWRT (BrainWorking Recursive Therapy) and Sand Play Therapy.

Hypnotherapy specifically targets the root cause of your Anxiety

Through the subconscious, it is possible to identify the underlying cause for your anxiety disorder and bring you lasting relief.

Anxiety is primarily caused by negative experiences in childhood, particularly in the formative years (0-7 years), which are imprinted upon the subconscious mind. This is triggered by similar negative experiences late in life, e.g. if a baby feels unwanted in utero it creates anxiety. Later in life, e.g. in marriage, this anxiety can be triggered when the person feels unwanted by a partner, and responds as if it is the original situation.

Anxiety treatment includes identifying and treating:

  • The initial sensitising event:
which caused the onset of the anxiety, which is almost always in utero.
  • The symptom producing event:
which is the first time after birth when anxiety is experienced. This is often within the first three years of life.
  • The symptom intensifying events:
which are all the following events, which intensified the anxiety.

As we have a conscious memory only from the age of 4 years, the underlying cause for anxiety can only be successfully treated through methods that help us gain access to our subconscious memory, which starts at the moment of conception. Such therapeutic methods are hypnotherapy, EMDR and sandplay.
