Clinical hypnotherapy is a scientifically researched discipline which is growing in popularity because it is a safe proven method of helping people to overcome a range of psychological, emotional problems and even psychosomatic diseases that arise in the subconscious mind.

What is Hypnosis

In the hypnotic state, you are totally awake, highly focussed, mentally alert and in control

In the normal wakeful state we are aware of many things simultaneously.

Hypnosis is a slightly altered state of mind where our focus narrows to one specific thing and becomes very intense, to the extent that we are still aware of the environment in the background, e.g. sounds, but it doesn’t distract us.

It is a natural phenomenon we experience in our daily lives whenever we focus intensely, such as performing a demanding task at work, when engrossed in reading a book, watching a movie, painting, daydreaming, writing an exam, etc.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. You are always in control. Nobody can force you to be hypnotised. You have to comply with the suggestions and allow it to happen to you.

Hypnosis is not sleep; you are totally awake, mentally more alert and your body relaxed. Your brain is highly suggestible to positive suggestions.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hypnosis

Is it difficult to awaken a hypnotised person? Will a hypnotised person remember afterwards what has occurred during hypnosis?

Clinical hypnotherapist, Jeanette Dreyer answers the most common questions about hypnotherapy.

What is the difference between conventional psychotherapy & hypnotherapy?

In conventional psychotherapy the therapist only has access to the conscious reasoning mind, whereas the hypnotherapist has access to the conscious as well as the subconscious mind.

The conscious mind never has the problem. It only experiences the symptoms of the real underlying problem which is situated in the subconscious mind, e.g. an obese person consciously wants to be slim. It could be that the person is experiencing anxiety and is since childhood subconsciously programmed to eat whenever anxious. Thus, in order to lose weight, the original cause for the anxiety (which might be fear of rejection) must be removed from the subconscious and it must be re-programmed with new coping skills.

Every individual consciously wants to be happy, healthy and successful. What stands in their way to achieve this is always a faulty thought pattern in the subconscious mind.

Psychotherapy can never successfully treat symptoms (e.g. techniques to cope with stress) unless the underlying cause has been dealt with.

The human mind can be compared to a computer. The subconscious mind is like the hard drive which contains the program — a thought pattern. This program determines what appears on the screen. The conscious mind can be compared to the screen and the keyboard. If you press the right keys and a fault keeps appearing on the screen, you know the programme is at fault and it will have to be repaired.

Through hypnotherapy this programme can be accessed and re-programmed, thus deleting underlying faulty thought patterns and replacing it with positive suggestions, which has often resulted in lasting relief for the client.

Why does hypnotherapy work so well?

It works directly with the subconscious mind to unlock the key to our problems and permanently change patterns of thought and behaviour. Our psychological and emotional problems begin in the subconscious; therefore it is logical that this is the best place to resolve them.

Hypnotherapy is unique in having, through the natural medium of trance, the opportunity to address the subconscious mind, removing emotional blockages and thus freeing us of unwanted emotions, thoughts and behaviours that are negatively impacting on our lives.

Although hypnotherapy is powerful, it is extremely safe and the client is always in control. You will only make the changes you want to make.

Clinical hypnotherapy is a scientifically researched discipline which is growing in popularity because it is a safe proven method of helping people to overcome problems permanently.

Can anybody be hypnotised?

Anyone with an average or higher intelligence can be hypnotised if he or she is willing to comply with the suggestions.

What qualities are necessary to be hypnotised?

The ability to concentrate, visualise and relax are important. The hypnotic ability can be improved with practice.

Is it difficult to awaken a hypnotised person?

No. You can wake a person simply by saying “Wake up!”

Will a hypnotised person remember afterwards what has occurred during hypnosis?

In the lighter stages of hypnosis a person usually remembers everything that occurred. At times, in the deeper states, a person may have only partial remembrance, but if the suggestion is given that he/she will remember everything, they will.

Is it possible to induce criminal acts in hypnosis?

No. A person under hypnosis maintains his/her moral code at all times and will resist suggestions that are repugnant to him/her.

What is the difference between stage hypnosis and therapeutic hypnosis?

Stage hypnosis is designed to create the illusion that the hypnotist has complete control over the participants. When the stage hypnotist asks for volunteers to take part in his show, several people then normally go onto stage. The hypnotist does a short induction, watching the response of the participants closely. He then sends back most, leaving only a few people onstage. This creates the faulty impression that those sent back are not hypnotisable.

The truth is that being hypnotised is an ability we all have, just like the ability to sing, run, etc. With every ability there is a small percentage of the population who has a talent in that ability, e.g. who become singers or athletes. It is the same with the ability to be hypnotised. A small percentage of the population has a hypnotic talent, i.e. the ability to enter into a hypnotic trance very quickly and very deeply. These are the people chosen by the stage hypnotist for his show. The volunteers comply with the suggestions of the hypnotist because they want to, not because they are being controlled. These are typically people who enjoy being the centre of attention.

Stage hypnosis is used entirely for entertainment.

Hypnosis used for therapeutic reasons is called hypnotherapy. A hypnotherapist is a qualified psychologist who is also trained to use certain therapeutic methods while the patient is in a hypnotic trance. In South Africa the training of hypnotherapists is done by the South African Society for Clinical Hypnosis (SASCH).

All members of SASCH are professional and include psychologists, psychiatrists, medical doctors and dentists. Hypnotherapy can bring about lasting relief from symptoms through adjustments on the subconscious level.

Is hypnotherapy in conflict with Christian values?

There are a number of fallacies about hypnosis caused by the magical sinister image created by the stage hypnotist about the hypnotic state. The main concern is the impression that the hypnotised person loses control and might be open to be possessed by evil spirits.

If it is considered that the hypnotic trance is just a state of intense concentration which we spontaneously enter into several times daily when concentrating on various tasks, we would then be subjected to being possessed by evil spirits while living our daily lives.

In the criticism against hypnosis it is in reality about the values, the competency and the trustworthiness of the hypnotherapist. It is in the best interest of the patient to be at ease with the therapist. This often comes from being referred by somebody who experienced the competency of and trusts the therapist; or by making sure the therapist you choose is registered, qualified and experienced.

Fears & Myths about Hypnotherapy

Clinical Hypnotherapist, Jeanette Dreyer unpacks the fears & myths that surround the practice of hypnotherapy

Losing Control

Fear: Many people fear that being hypnotised means becoming unconscious, losing control, having your mind taken over or being taken advantage of.

Reality: The opposite is true – In the normal wakeful state we are aware of many things simultaneously. Hypnosis is a slightly altered state of mind where our focus narrows to one specific thing and becomes very intense, to the extent that we are still aware of the environment in the background, e.g. sounds, but it doesn’t distract us. Hypnosis allows you to feel more relaxed, less fearful & more open to positive suggestions. You are, however, totally awake, highly focussed, mentally alert & in control.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis, because you allow yourself to be hypnotised. Nobody can force you. The hypnotised person complies at will and can come out of hypnosis whenever they want to. In no way are ordinary rules of human behaviour suspended, e.g. if a suggestion is given with which a person disagrees it will be rejected.

Hypnotherapy is based on many years of clinical research and is a serious process of self-improvement, not entertainment.

Dark or Supernatural

Fear: Some people fear that when in a trance, evil spirits or demons can enter their minds.

Reality: Hypnosis is a natural state of intense concentration, which is a natural phenomenon we experience in our daily lives, when we perform demanding tasks at work, when engrossed in reading a book, watching a movie, painting, daydreaming, writing an exam, etc.

If you don’t fear that evil spirits could enter our minds while we concentrate intensely in our daily tasks, you shouldn’t fear hypnosis.

In conflict with Christian values

Fear: There are a number of fallacies about hypnosis caused by the magical sinister image created by the stage hypnotist about the hypnotic state.

Jeanette Dreyer is a SASCH registered Clinical Hypnotherapist at the Eureka Centre.

Revealing deep secrets

Fear: Under hypnosis a person could be made to reveal personal details or secrets.

Reality: If this was possible, the police would be the keenest students of hypnosis. The image of a trance created by the media is at fault, because people expect to become unconscious and robotic, not aware of what they are saying or doing. The reality is that you remain in control, very conscious and aware.

Getting “Stuck” in Hypnosis

Fear: What if I am hypnotised and I am not able to “snap” out of it?

Reality: Hypnosis is a very safe practice & based on many years of sound clinical research. It’s easy to come out of hypnosis, simply by opening your eyes, speaking or stretching.

There are many perceptions about hypnosis that are misleading, & we only hope that over time, more people will be able to tell the lies from the truth.

In reality, hypnotherapy remains a safe, proven method of helping people to overcome a range of psychological & emotional problems that arise in the subconscious mind. It works directly with the subconscious mind to unlock the key to our problems & change patterns of thought & behaviour.

The Hypnotherapy Process

Have you booked a hypnotherapy session with us? Here’s some additional info to guide you on what to expect and how our sessions are structured.

Hypnotherapy can be very powerful in treating a wide range of psychological problems and psychosomatic diseases by uncovering and removing the underlying cause of the problem in the subconscious mind.

Diagnosis

The first session of 70 minutes is spent to get to know the person and the nature of the presenting problem by working through a structured questionnaire. This gives the conscious information.

The person then sets goals for the therapy.

The second session is typically 120 minutes long and is spent obtaining the subconscious information about the problem: a test is done with the subconscious mind to determine the underlying cause of the presenting problem.

Hypnotherapy Counselling

Through hypnosis regressions are done to traumatic events in the past which are the underlying cause of the presenting problem.

The subconscious mind is de-programmed – faulty thought patterns are deleted and re-programmed – and then replaced by positive suggestions and new healthy coping mechanisms.

The above is all done in 90-120 minute sessions at a time. The intensity of the problem determines the length of the treatment.

We offer hypnotherapy for a wide range of problems:

Testimonials

We at Eureka Centre have many satisfied clients. Below are some of their inspiring stories:

"Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss"

I highly recommend hypnotherapy for weight loss. It helped me to find the subconscious reason for my comfort eating which related to a low self-image which was formed in my childhood.

Once my self-image improved I gained control over my eating habits and lost 13kg without a diet and have maintained it ever since without watching my diet.

"Freedom From Depression"

One of the driving reasons for me approaching Jeanette at the Eureka Centre in the first instance, was to understand the blockages in my memory of some parts of my life. It was also to understand my emotions and how to deal with them, to understand my need to be a people-pleaser, to understand my nightly interrupted sleeping pattern (specifically after several family and friends’ deaths in the years 2010 and 2011), and then to understand my inability to manage my weight at the desired level.

Through several sessions of hypnotherapy, I discovered the subconscious reasons why I think and behave in certain ways. I found it so very interesting to learn that all the issues stemmed from when my mother was pregnant with me and my early childhood years! My interpretation of my parents’ financial situation and my fear that they won’t be able to provide for me and my two older siblings lead to me being good and quiet so Mom wouldn’t be stressed. I was also good and not crying so that my sister and brother would then play with me. When I did cry e.g. when I got hurt or needed attention Mom misunderstood my needs and fed me. This created a pattern of eating in stead of dealing with my emotions. I became a pleaser to avoid rejection. I never learned to express my emotions. This caused me to feel lonely and depressed, especially after my parents’ and husband’s death. In therapy I learned how to express myself and my relationship with family and friends improved greatly.

My learnings about rebuilding my relationship with God have been very inspiring, and I have no doubt that these will be part of the next chapter in my future ahead. Through these discoveries, I now sleep peacefully throughout the night and awake more refreshed and energetic. I immediately noticed a greater inner peace in myself overall, and am very aware of positive changes in my thoughts and behaviour.

Jeanette, thank you for helping me to (re)discover myself. Thank you for providing me with the tools (including recommended book titles) to use as I venture through my future life. You are amazing and have a wonderful talent which enriches those peoples’ lives who seek to discover themselves.

"Finding My Freedom"

I am a 41 year old female and after years of therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists and various techniques to try and find a solution for my anxiety, depression, anger, weight problems and on-going gut feeling that something was not right and it made me feel so insecure and unhappy I longed to find peace and an explanation to all these inner feelings, I honestly felt trapped.

I found myself making very bad decisions, after losing my husband to divorce and at the same time losing my mother to cancer. I felt alone and desperate for love. I fell into a 7 year relationship with a married man, whom I loved and adored and was promised that he would one day marry me. The situation was making me even more insecure and unhappy and I just felt too weak and out of control to leave him.

I approached the Eureka Centre in October 2013 to undergo Hypnotherapy. With the help of hypnotherapy I discovered my subconscious reasons with trust issues, rejection, anger, letting go and closure on death and bad decision making.

Today I can say to anybody out there, who might be in a similar situation and feels that there is no hope, trust me there is. Without Jeanette Dreyer and her commitment to helping me discover that I am a beautiful soul that deserves respect, love, honour and many more beautiful things that life has to offer. Life is here to be lived to the fullest. I would like to thank Jeanette for her support and unbelievable dedication to help me find my freedom.

"It is like a miracle"

Our 25 year old daughter had been having anger outbursts for the past three years. It was progressively getting worse. She was verbally abusing me and my wife, and attacking us physically. We tried everything – various forms of conventional psychology and psychiatric treatment, without any success. We were desperate.

Hypnotherapy at Eureka Centre changed our lives. After a few hypnotherapy sessions she became calm and loving, as she has always been before. It is like a miracle. Hypnotherapy works!

"Hypnotherapy for Depression"

I was very depressed and often contemplated suicide. After hypnotherapy at Eureka Centre I am free from depression. I have a new enthusiasm for life. Hypnotherapy is the answer.

– Eureka Centre Client

"Freedom from Insomnia"

I was desperate to find a way to beat insomnia after years on sleeping tablets. Through hypnotherapy at Eureka Centre I found exactly that! Due to financial problems my parents experienced while my mom was pregnant with me I had a lot of anxiety, fearing they would not be able to provide for me and I would die. My husband lost his job and this triggered my insomnia.

– Eureka Centre Client

"Freedom to Quit Smoking"

I would recommend hypnotherapy to anyone who is determined to quit smoking.  I feel like I have a new lease on life and it was easy.  I’m filled with vitality and have learnt tools which I can apply daily to any situation.
