All eating disorders have an underlying emotional cause, e.g. people overeat when feeling anxious, depressed or unworthy. Food is used to comfort themselves – hence the term “comfort eating”.
The compulsion to eat when these negative emotions are experienced comes from the subconscious mind. It has been programmed in the formative years, 0-7 years, to use comfort eating as a coping mechanism when negative emotions are experienced. |

This programming is reinforced during the rest of life with subsequent events causing these emotions.
The most important part of this programming takes place in the womb where the baby is subjected to the mom’s emotions and eating habits, and has no control.
An example: If a mother is very busy and has an irregular eating pattern, sometimes skipping meals, the baby is terrified of starving. The survival instinct is triggered and when the mom does eat, the baby takes in as much as possible, storing food, trying to prevent going through the same agony again. This results in becoming a compulsive eater later in life, even though as an adult a person knows there is enough food, they cannot control this compulsion, because the subconscious programming overrules the conscious mind.
The main reason people have difficulty losing weight is they try to use willpower.
Willpower is in the conscious mind while emotions and the survival instinct are in the subconscious mind. There is a law of the mind which states: Whenever the subconscious and the conscious mind are in conflict, the subconscious always wins. Thus the battle is futile.
The answer to weight loss or any other eating disorder is to de-programme the subconscious – that is, to delete the underlying causative faulty belief which caused the anxiety, depression or unworthiness, and then to re-programme the subconscious with a healthy way of life.
Once a person is aware of the causative faulty beliefs and it has been deleted and replaced with positive suggestions, it becomes easy to maintain a healthy lifestyle which includes:
- regular exercise
- healthy eating
- drinking eight glasses of water a day
- enough sleep
- a balanced life
Patients are trained to recognise the true physiological hunger feeling. This is the only time they eat. They learn to keep in tune with that hunger sensation and the moment it is gone, they cease eating. This puts diets completely out of the picture.
Diets are useless. The first 3 letters of the word diet reads “die”. The subconscious mind perceives a diet as a threat and will vigorously defend itself. It will tolerate a diet for a short while and will allow you to lose a few kilos, but then fights back by putting back all the weight you lost and a few extra kilos!
