- taking deep breaths (through a cigarette)
- and the taste and feel of something you're sucking on which is associated with sucking on a breast or bottle as a baby, which had a calming effect
- and keeping the hands busy when bored
Smoking is a compulsion from a deep part of the subconscious mind.
This compulsion arises whenever stress is experienced and it triggers the subconscious memory of experiences earlier in life when difficulty in breathing was experienced such as a difficult birth, an asthma attack, a near drowning experience or losing consciousness.
The subconscious needs a proof that you can breathe. Smoking provides this proof, because you can "see your breath" as you blow out the smoke. This reassures the subconscious and the anxiety subsides.
Methods that are based on replacing nicotine fail because they do not address the real problem.
